is amazing
but true. I am in the riverside town of Vang Vieng, Laos, standing
on a bamboo bridge that spans the 150-yard breadth of the Nam
Song, yet I am reminded, of all things, of the Garden State
Parkway. This is because the man barring my way is demanding
a toll: 1,000 kips for me, plus the same for my rented mountain
